My expertise
Architecture Design
UX architecture is my bread and butter. I enjoy solving the platform issues caused by the complex structuring of multi-product organizations and creating elegant solutions to customer problems by streamlining underlying systems. Great UX starts from the base.
Management
I lead the Payments UX Team at HubSpot, where I ensure that millions of dollars in revenue flow seamlessly through the HubSpot ecosystem. I thrive on balancing strategic oversight with hands-on collaboration, and I bring proven experience in guiding multiple products and complex initiatives to success.
Facilitation
In believing collaboration is of the utmost importance, I have also become an expert in facilitating cross-discipline sprints and workshops, so much so that I actively invite eng to participate in design crits (which has been a game changer).
Experience Design
Experience design is about creating interactions that are robust, intuitive, and simple. I believe design should be grounded in research and data, elevated by high craft, and expanded through novel AI solutions. Together, these principles ensure experiences that are both effective and inspiring.
Planning STRATEGY
In my role, I am directly responsible for creating and managing our NorthStar backlog along with product and eng. As a result, I understand the importance of quick, high-yield deliverables while not sacrificing the overall vision of the product.
Design management
I work across multiple projects simultaneously (too many at the moment). This stretching of effort requires strong project management skills and a focus on design craft to ensure quality at scale. By carefully managing backlogs and leveraging AI enablement, I help teams stay aligned, avoid costly missteps, and deliver outcomes that drive real impact.
Interface Design
Interface design is essential to delight any customer, whether new or old. However, while I find the interface to be of utmost importance it is also the last thing that should be worked on to solve a UX problem. Sometimes it is treated more as cake than icing.
Collaboration
I believe collaboration is the cornerstone of building great products. No single person or role holds all the answers, it takes the collective expertise of cross-functional teams to craft solutions that are both impactful and enduring.
Pitching
I feel like pitching is not something that many designers put much effort into. I thrive in any environment that allows you to pitch and seek investment in the cutting edge or the left behind. This is a skill I require in my reports as I find it integral to their further success.
The fun stuff
Skateboarding
I've been skateboarding for 20+ years, which has taught me many life lessons. But the most important: One, you must be determined to better because it takes failing to learn. Two, there are always new ways to look a something.
Art Creating
I am a classicly trained painter and have not stopped creating. I am connected to the art scene in both Seattle and Raleigh areas doing pop-ups with my custom jackets and other wears.
Pun making
I am a multi-time pun champion, and though I know that gets a groan out of most, I think it shows adaptability and humor. It shows that with a change of perspective, the meaning can change. Furthermore, it shows that I am an absolute nerd.
“The term “visionary” gets thrown around a lot, especially in the product world, but Mac is a true visionary — he has real product vision about how that product can impact the lives of users. He is someone who cares deeply about how his products impact the world, and he brings a lot of UX design skill to ensure that his products make the world better through great user experience. Plus, Mac is a lot of fun to work with! .”
